Gcse pe
subject overview
GCSE P.E. is an opportunity for pupils to:
prepare for further education in Physical Education,
develop transferable skills and key skills that employers are looking for,
lead a wide variety of employment opportunities,
improve current performance, no matter what the fitness levels,
learn a lot about health, well-being and the human body and how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
The GCSE course is split up into 3 main aspects: the theoretical exam (60%), the physical exam (30%) and a Personal Exercise Plan (PEP) (10%). Delivery of this course will be over five hours of which four are carried out in the classroom focusing on the theoretical delivery and the PEP and continued delivery of the individual skills and competitive situations required for the practical element of the course. A further hour will be used to enhance pupils’ skills in the two main areas of physical assessment: individual and team sports. A final practical assessment will assess three different sports.
Throughout the theoretical course our intent is that pupils’ will learn key terminology and technical language which they will require to answer exam style questions. Work carried out in lessons will not only cover content but will also look at command words used in written assessments (e.g. identify, describe, evaluate) and how to ‘unlock’ questions. Retrieval practice takes place throughout the course to allow teachers and students to review their knowledge from previous topics covered previously. Within PEP lessons students will use their knowledge in a predominantly practical setting which works alongside work in theory lessons.
GCSE Sports Offered in lesson time:
Team sports: football, netball, handball
Individual sports: table tennis, athletics, badminton and trampolining.
