Youth Speaks
Public Speaking. For some, their worst nightmare and something that fills them with fear. For others, a chance to perform and share their thoughts and opinions.
The Rotary hold an annual competition called 'Youth Speaks: A debate' which is designed to encourage young people to try their hand at public speaking and debating. Starting with a local heat, the competition progresses through to a national final. For years, Redhill has taken part in this competition that teachers our pupils how to organise and present their opinions on a topic of their choice. This year, the first round was held at Pedmore High School on Thursday 27th January.
Our groups worked so hard and wrote three very different speeches to cover their debate topics. Our first 'intermediate' group set out to discuss whether 'Covid was manufactured' and had some fantastic points for either side. The second of our groups looked at the argument that the 'current education system develops well rounded citizens.' Following this, our senior team was up against tough competition with their debate on whether 'companies are taking advantage of our data.' All three groups had done some excellent research to support their arguments.
All three teams made Redhill school very proud and showed a real commitment through the whole process. With Covid absences and last minute replacements they faced some troubles but myself, Miss Bradburn Miss Jones are all very grateful for their hard work.
