LGBTQ+ Club

The launch of the LGBTQ+ was excitedly welcomed by students and staff at Redhill. The group uses the library one break time per week as a private common room, to chat, get to know each other and have that safe space to either speak openly about things on their minds or just to enjoy the company of other LGBTQ members and allies. We have a fantastic regular group and it’s lovely to see students bringing their friends who just want to know a bit more or who like socialising with the group. Mrs Gonderton started looking at opportunities for speakers and events to be present during these meet-ups and we have a wonderful line up for the coming weeks.

Eva Echo

On Thursday 9th December, Eva came to speak to our LGBTQ+ club about her transgender experience, activism, dealing with hate and empowerment. She was very inspiring and her story conveyed her strength through adversities and prejudices in her life. The students really valued the session and we hope she will return to Redhill soon.

 WHAT + LGBTQ Fusion

Two representatives of WHAT and LGBTQ+ Fusion came to speak to our LGBTQ club about the range of support options that are available with their services. They have a variety of social media and telephone contact methods, as well as a centre in Stourbridge for face to face meetings. The students really appreciated their information and open approach to the conversation about seeking help and advice.

‘OUT’ Disney’s Short Film

On the 27th January, the LGBTQ+ club watched a short Disney film about self-acceptance and finding the courage to come out to people close to you.

“It’s about common family issues that are true to human experience. It’s a story that is a reflection of truths that exist in the world,” “Out” producer Max Sachar said in a phone interview. “When we first created it for the folks at Disney+, I don’t think there was any hesitation that they felt the same way, that this is a family film that fits in with the rest of Pixar and Disney films that are also on that platform.”

It was a lovely way to spend break time and we look forward to the next few weeks of the club’s meet-ups.

Flower Pot Designs

We welcomed Years 7 and 8 to the club on the 3rd March and we all designed flowerpots! We are going to plant flowers in them and watch them grow, either at home or at school. Below are some of the fantastic designs made! This was a great icebreaker for the younger years as they figure out what the club is all about and get to know the other members.

Eva Echo Returns for Transgender Visibility Day 2022

We welcomed Eva back to our school on Thursday 31st March for Transgender Visibility Day. She was very insightful and inspiring and it was nice seeing the students engage and ask questions. She spoke about being proud of who you are and standing up for your rightful place in society. She also gave advice on how to respond to bullies, as well as being open to answering questions when people want to learn. We hope to see her again soon to speak to a wider audience.
