Twisted Tales Creative Writing Competition

Last year, over 20,000 students participated, and the incredible Twisted Tales competition is now open for this year. This is a fantastic competition for students to write a piece of creative writing with a plot twist, for the chance for it to be published in a book! Please click the above link to learn more.

Top tips for writing a story with a plot twist...

  1. The unexpected villain, such as an illness, the nice OAP next door or a ghostly shadow...

  2. When the main conflict is resolved, throw in an unforeseen turn of events

  3. An open ending, where the reader is left to ponder what happened next

  4. Misdirection - red herrings, dead ends or misguided attention

  5. False assumptions – let the reader think they know what’s going to happen, but it doesn’t
